Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of thousands of synthetic chemicals, they all contain carbon-fluorine bonds, which are one of the strongest chemical bonds in organic chemistry, this means that they resist degradation when used and also in the environment,PFAS are widely used in the fields of industrial production and daily consumption. Relevant evidence shows that PFAS has caused global pollution to the environment, wildlife and human beings, accumulated in human bodies and posed a direct threat to human health, and the pollution of PFAS is aggravating the biodiversity crisis. The harm of perfluorinated compounds to human beings and the environment has attracted wide attention of relevant countries and international organizations, and more and more perfluorinated compounds have been or will be brought into the regulatory control.

1. What is PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) defined as: any substance that contains at least one fully fluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I attached to it)

2. Is there a specific list of controlled substances in the regulations? For PFAS?

No, there is not a specific list of controlled substances in the regulations。

3. What is the relationship between PFOA PFOS C9-C14PFCA and PFAS?

According to the difference of functional groups, PFAS can be divided into perfluorocarboxylic acids with the abbreviation of -COOH (carboxyl) ending in A, perfluorosulfonic acids with the abbreviation of -SO3H (sulfonic acid group) ending in S and perfluoro acids with other groups. PFOA, PFOS, PFHxA, PFHxS, C9-C14PFCAs, C9-C20PFCA, LCPFAC, etc. all belong to PFAS.
